10x6.5 loom-beaded tapestry

delica glass beads

Nancy is a retired surgeon living in Santa Fe. She was an art history major at Harvard and felt Taos was always a national art center and the home of her cousin, the painter Dorothy Brett.

Nancy Fordyce is 90 years old. As a retired surgeon, she has maintained her eyesight and manual dexterity to an impressive degree. Inspired by the imagery found in our surrounding tribal cultures and those farther away in Asia and South America, Fordyce creates her own designs, maps them on graph paper and beads on a loom. Many pieces contain over 20,000 tiny glass beads!

“I was fascinated by the over 600 different colors and finishes of the delica beads and wanted to weave many different patterns and many different color combinations. Also wanted to keep my hands busy. I like to put my tapestries in a window as the sunlight does amazing things.”
